The Renaming of Victoria House

By Natascha Henderson | Monday, 01 August 2022

From Roebuck’s Rose in the stunning Chimney Nature Reserve to The Boatman’s Reading Rooms in Deal, Quince is proud to create a selection of high end holiday homes in just the right places in the South of England.

The founder of Quince, Sarah Wood, has 20 years of experience in the holiday let industry with specialist knowledge in interior design which is showcased throughout each property. However, before the property can be designed and decorated there is an entire journey that we go on to develop the persona of the property.  From the selection of the location to the naming of the property, each of our holiday homes have their own individual identity.

A New Identity

The renaming of a property is not straightforward. Take Victoria House, for example, our recently acquired property located in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. The property has been entirely renovated and lifted to a high standard holiday home, fit to join the Quince property portfolio.

Aldeburgh History

Renaming a property requires research. When looking into the history of Aldeburgh, the large fishing community was a main feature. With history of a leading port and a flourishing shipbuilding industry it was key for the renaming of Victoria House to keep this history alive. When a fisherman comes into the harbour they would often stay in a small single storied house, often in the country, called a Penty. A fisherman’s house seemed to resonate with the formerly named Victoria House due to its stunning views over the North Sea and the nautical theme of Aldeburgh.

Nearby, the archaeological dig site of Sutton Hoo embodies this historic nature. With two early medieval cemeteries that can be dated back from 6th and 7th century, it was important that this was included in some way. Through further exploration it was discovered that a ‘Hoo’ is another way to say a Spur on a hill – much like Victoria House. Victoria House is positioned in the heart of a leafy, Victorian residential area located on a gentle hill.  Through trialing different ways to incorporate the two words together the final decision was made.

Penty on the Hoo

Without further ado, we’d like to introduce Penty on the Hoo, the latest addition to our Quince portfolio.
