Inside the Lock Keepers Snipe

By Evie Kennedy | Monday, 25 July 2022

Introducing The Lock Keepers Snipe, named after the curious Snipes inhabiting the neighbouring Chimney Nature Reserve in Oxfordshire and the only lock on the Thames just a mile away. In addition to the 700 acres of the reserve, The Lock Keepers Snipe is nestled within 13 acres of private grounds just waiting to be explored.

Inspired by its location and use, The Lock Keepers Snipe has been carefully redesigned to nod to its surroundings. Founder, Sarah Wood, certainly has an eye for all things interiors and has managed to create a home away from home that will help bring a smile to anyone’s face.

All in the detail

Being south facing The Lock Keepers Snipe is flooded in light natural light,  highlighting the vibrant colours which flawlessly match the interior furnishings. From the Victorian buttoned armchair that has been re–upholstered to the vintage Oka lamps, each piece has been hand selected and ideally placed.

The U shaped barn means that the open plan living area is at the heart of the home, and all of the bedrooms face the beautifully landscaped courtyard garden. The boucle fabric sofa, Pooky floor lamps and plump cushions paired with the Farrow and Ball’s Stiffkey Blue, instantly creates a relaxed ambience. Yet the landscaped courtyard at the centre of the property is a safe space for children and dogs to play in a safe place, all whilst keeping a close eye from any corner of the house.

A Look closer

Sleeping 14 guests across six bedrooms, there are three super king size beds with an additional two twin rooms and another three single beds in the sixth bedroom – ideal for large groups, families and even multi-generational stays. Each king sized bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom, with the addition of a classically Quince roll top bath in the master bedroom. Not forgetting the outdoor copper bath. Whether it’s a warm summer’s evening or a crisp winter’s night, an alfresco soak never goes amiss.

At the heart of any home is the kitchen, and whether it’s cooking up a feast for the family, or getting someone in (we don’t blame you) to save the hassle, the sociable kitchen and dining dining area is a hostesses dream. Alternatively, The Double Red Duke and The Snooty Mehmaan are just around the corner if you fancy a change of scenery.

The Surrounding area

The Lock Keepers Snipe is just moments away from the pretty Cotswolds villages and rolling Oxfordshire hills. However, one thing that will never get old is the Chimney Nature Reserve that surrounds the house. Whether you’re wandering along The Thames Path National Trail that runs through the reserve, or keeping an eye out for the nature and wildlife that’ll turn up on your doorstep, there’s no need to venture far. Some of our guests have been lucky enough to spot the short-eared Owl, Brown Hares, Otters and of course the house’s namesake – The Snipe.
